Two board game designers allegedly stole around $300.000 worth of Magic the Gathering cards at GenCon in August. The Marion County District Attorney's Office in Indianpolis has since filed charges. The suspected thieves face up to six years in prison and a $10.000 fine.
The case was notable for several reasons. First of all, such massive trading card thefts are rare, and the alleged thieves were so stupid that you could almost feel sorry for them.
There is a risk of several years in prison
At GenCon, the largest board game trade fair in North America, the two game designers Thomas Dunbar and Andrew Giaume are said to have stolen an entire pallet of cards from the trading card game Magic the Gathering from the warehouse of the provider “Pastimes Comics & Games”. They were apparently filmed and were also seen wearing clothing that showed their publisher's logo. The two were active exhibitors at the convention to present their game “Castle Assault”.
The prosecution's accusation is now a level 5 felony in Indianapolis (“Level 5 Felony”). This stage involves, among other things, allegations of cocaine trafficking or burglary. If convicted, such acts are punishable by a prison sentence of at least one year and up to six years. There is also a fine of $10.000.
Specifically, Thomas Dunbar and Andrew Giaume are accused of getting a pallet truck, loading boxes with Magic cards and then transporting them to a parking lot. It is unclear where the cargo was then taken. In any case, the New York State Police later discovered the stolen goods and sent them to the police department in Indianapolis for evidence.
