A rumor about a port of one of the best video games of all time is now forming the basis for speculation surrounding GTA 6 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Admittedly, it's a pretty hair-raising chain of speculations that are being used to start a discussion about GTA 6 on the Nintendo Switch. For fans of Nintendo's hybrid console, it would be a dream come true – everyone else would Grand Theft Auto VI on the PC or one of the powerhouse consoles anyway, to experience the long-awaited gangster epic in visually flawless quality. Nevertheless, GTA 6 on the Nintendo Switch 2 would be especially interesting in handheld mode. But how did these rumors even come about?

The rumor was triggered by another rumor. A scene insider recently stated that one of the best video games of all time would be released for the Nintendo Switch 2: Red Dead Redemption 2. If "NateTheHate's" claims were to prove true, that alone would be a real sensation – the expert even goes into detail about the possible release date. According to him, Red Dead Redemption 2 for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to be released on the new hybrid console by March 2026. There's no official confirmation – neither Rockstar Games nor Nintendo have provided any information about themselves or the game.

One thing is clear, however: Rockstar Games would not use a platform like Nintendo Switch 2 would certainly be happy to use it for game sales simply because of its popularity. A port of Red Dead Redemption 2 would make sense from a purely economic perspective. Especially since such a project could certainly be technically feasible; after all, CD Projekt Red also brought the resource-hungry open-world game Cyberpunk 2077 to the handy Nintendo Switch 2 in impressive quality. Ultimately, Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a lot of fun not only for Western fans, but also for lovers of story-driven open-world games. The title has achieved a Metacritic rating of 97 points – the game is ranked among the ten best video games of all time. With such basic data, the title is considered a genuine drawcard for a console – especially in the case of the Nintendo Switch 2, this could boost sales sustainably, as there is currently no "system seller."

The assumption that a game of the caliber of GTA 6 is possible should Red Dead Redemption 2 be Nintendo Switch 2 is a bold move, however. Theoretically, a port isn't out of the question—who knows what Rockstar Games is working on behind closed doors? The development studio hasn't made any hints in this direction.

However, purely performance-related considerations could suggest a port. According to the official website, Grand Theft Auto 6 will ultimately be released not only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but also for the weaker Xbox Series S. Technical experts had particularly criticized the GPU of the Nintendo Switch 2 on a performance level with the Xbox Series S - and because, according to Microsoft, every Xbox Series X game should run on the S model, it should also apply that GTA 6 can be played on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Since neither Rockstar Games title has been officially confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, fans will have to be patient. GTA 6 is scheduled to release on May 26, 2026 – whether that will also be the case for the Nintendo console remains to be seen. There may indeed be a port, but it will be released later.
