Rockstar Games has generously postponed the release of GTA 6. The open-world game won't be released until May 26, 2026. And suddenly, the developers have finally set off a fireworks display, releasing the second trailer and a wealth of information. However, there's one problem with the new video: It doesn't show much actual gameplay.
Fans had to wait a long time for a real release date and the second trailer, which the community felt Rockstar Games should have released long ago. Now the time has come, and the roughly two-and-a-half-minute video is steadily gathering views. Within just under four hours, the trailer was viewed around seventeen million times. By comparison, the first trailer for GTA 6 has garnered just over 250 million views so far – could the new video break that record? It's possible, as fans are eager for new information and moving images:
In the second trailer for GTA 6, Rockstar Games once again gives fans a glimpse into the upcoming game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. And the scenes shown are certainly impressive in terms of quality. It's now clear: Jason and Lucia are indeed the focus – and a conspiracy seems to be tying all the threads of the story together.
The developers roughly frame the story, write on the official website of Grand Theft Auto 6: "[...]when one simple twist goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in all of America. Amidst a criminal conspiracy spanning the entire state of Leonida, they are forced to rely on each other more than ever if they are to survive."
Rockstar Games has also released ample background information on the main characters themselves, including their surnames: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The former is an ex-soldier with a difficult youth and a henchman for drug dealers. The latter is a fighter with close family ties who spent time in prison. Sympathy bonus? None of that applies to either character, at least not at first glance. Rockstar Games will have to stretch the story considerably to create a connection between the main characters and the player at the gamepad. And that's not a criticism: This challenge could lead to a terrific gaming experience.
The developers could achieve this through the supporting characters, about whom there is also some information. Cal Hampton seems like the eccentric character that a good story needs to get going. Boobie Ike, on the other hand, could provide both glamour and drama with his music label gimmick and the musician Dre'Quan Priest. The other characters, including Brian Heder, who appears right at the beginning of the new trailer, also indicate that drug dealing is likely to play a larger role. If one takes the history of the USA and its handling of drug offenses and cartels as a template, the developers have plenty of scope to create a conspiracy story that extends into the political realm. What it will ultimately be about remains to be seen. The developers will certainly use the novelty of the main character duo and the first female protagonist cleverly. This offers clean potential.
The second trailer for GTA 6 does have one flaw, however: The developers show a ton of cutscenes and accompany the images with cool music – but fans don't get to see any real gameplay this time either. Rockstar Games says the trailer consists of equal parts cutscenes and gameplay, and this is partly glimpsed. However, there are still no sequences where a pure view of the gameplay can be seen.
