Funko is mainly known for its collectible pop figures, but board games have also been in the toy provider's portfolio for a long time, including mainly licensed titles. This is now surprisingly over: Funko has sold the rights to the Dutch publisher Goliath Games.
A few days ago, Goliath Games officially confirmed the cooperation. This is a multi-year partnership, as part of which new board games and puzzles will now be developed and brought onto the market. The news came as quite a surprise. It is unclear how much money was involved in the deal between Funko and Goliath Games. Funko had accepted an initial payment, but will still receive license fees from Goliath Games for the use of the brand in the future.
Cooperation for new games
The Dutch secured the entire portfolio of Funko board games. And: The assets of Prospero Hall also went to Goliath Games as a result of the agreement, because Funko bought Forrest-Pruzan and their sub-brand Prospero Hall in 2019, thereby entering the development of mass-market board games in the first place. There are a few of them today: Funko brought licensed board games based on pop figures, among others, and titles later followed, in particular Back to the Future, E.T. or Alfred Hitchcock's The Courtyard Window.
For Goliath Games, the deal is a kind of realignment in the board game market, after all, the Dutch had previously mainly released mass-market and more classic family games. The acquisition could now also create new products that were not previously served by the publisher.
“Funko Games is a highly respected brand that includes hundreds of recently created board games as well as a great portfolio from Forrest-Pruzan. We look forward to bringing the Funko brand and style to the gaming world in new and innovative ways,” said Jochanan Golad, Chief Executive Officer of Goliath.
It is unclear what exactly will happen to the developers of Prospero Hall. According to information from the industry website Boardgamewire, none of the approximately 20 employees have yet been offered a job at Goliath Games. There is no mention of this in the official announcement.
Founded in 1980, Goliath is one of the few family-owned global toy and game companies. Goliath is a developer, manufacturer and distributor of a wide range of products with offices in 15 countries and exporting games to over 100 countries.
