Ravensburger continues to support the success of Disney Lorcana with new card sets: The Domain of Jafar was recently launched – but things are about to get much more exciting for fans with the ninth set, which will be released in September. This is when drastic changes come into play.
This summer, Ravensburger's successful title celebrates its second anniversary – and the publisher apparently isn't slowing down this year either. New card sets will continue to be released with the planned regularity: four per year. The pace is high for collectors, while players benefit from the constant adjustments and innovations that come with each theme set release. Ravensburger recently launched the eighth set, Domain of Jafar.
Ravensburger is also continuing the story behind the collectible card game. This may seem minor, but it is a truly unique selling point of Disney Lorcana and is particularly interesting for fans of the "House of the Mouse." The new set focuses on Jafar from Disney's Aladdin. Ravensburger summarizes the new storyline as follows: "Jafar now possesses the Hexwell Crown and has used its power to corrupt Archazia's island to his evil will. Traps and illusions characterize 'Domain of Jafar,' and Glimmer, like Jasmine - the tireless strategist, and Rapunzel - the climber, must work together to reclaim the crown and defeat the evil vizier." The eighth set has been available in stores since June 6. The release was accompanied by the new release "The Luminari Chronicles: Raid on the Palace," a new cooperative game for up to four players in which players must face off against Jafar and his minions. Conceptually, Ravensburger develops the idea of “Disney Lorcana TCG: Getting Started“ – a board game-like spin-off of the popular collectible card game, which is primarily intended to attract beginners to the genre.
Ravensburger appeals even more to collectors
One thing is clear: Disney Lorcana is not just about playing, but also about collecting. "Collecting is an important part of any trading card game, and we want to show how Disney Lorcana inspires fans with every booster pack opened," explains Elaine Chase, Chief Marketing Officer for trading card games at Ravensburger. The expert has over 30 years of experience in the trading card game sector. Chase previously worked for Wizards of the Coast for around 25 years, initially serving as Lead Game Designer for Magic the Gathering, among other roles, and later holding various management positions within the company. She only moved to Ravensburger in September of last year, so Elaine Chase has a wealth of knowledge about trading card games.
Ravensburger now aims to appeal to Disney fans with a new offering designed to "awaken the joy of collecting all the glimmers, places, and songs beautifully depicted on each Disney Lorcana card." A collector's starter set is available for this purpose – "perfect for anyone who loves Disney and wants to start collecting cards featuring their favorite characters and moments from Disney classics," says Chase.
Directly linked to the passion for collecting is a radical change that awaits fans of Disney Lorcana this fall. Specifically, with the ninth set, "Myths," Ravensburger will be introducing two new rarity levels to the booster packs: Mythic and Iconic.
The publisher explains: "Iconic cards are extremely rare, and there are only two artworks per set, while Mythic cards are more common than the previous Enchanted cards and impress with special artwork and foil treatment." Here, Ravensburger is following a path that Fantasy Flight Games recently took with Star Wars: Unlimited with the limited "Carbonite Packs" – fans now have the chance to get their hands on incredibly rare cards with special graphic treats, which were called "Prestige Variants" in the Star Wars trading card game. With Disney Lorcana, the makers are now pulling a similar trick to offer fans new collecting incentives. The ninth set will be released worldwide on September 5, 2025, as Ravensburger announced.
Change also for competitive games
The two new rarity levels won't be the only changes. Fans who regularly compete in competitive games are especially in for a treat. The set marks a turning point for competitive play, explains the publisher: "For the first time, cards from the first four sets will be rotated out of the Core Constructed format and will therefore no longer be legal in competitive play. However, these cards will remain playable in the new Infinity Constructed format."
Fans can continue to play with their entire card collection, but the rotation now ensures the game remains fresh and varied. "To keep competitive play lively, it's important to rotate older cards. This opens up new strategies and fresh deck ideas," explains Ryan Miller, Brand Manager and Co-Designer of Disney Lorcana TCG at Ravensburger. "But because we know there are cards from the early sets that are important to many fans, and not all of them were able to get their hands on them in the first year, we're reprinting some of these cards in Mythics—including Enchanted versions of some fan favorites!"
Ravenburger also contributes to the events Disney Lorcan is approaching a climax. The best players will compete against each other in a world championship on June 28 and 29. 28 of the world's best Disney Lorcana players will then vie for the title of its kind. Those not participating can follow the event via livestream on Twitch. Locally in Germany, fans will also be able to find Ravensburger at Gamescom in Cologne this year and later in the year at GAME in Essen There will be new card reveals and previews of upcoming sets.
The fact that Ravensburger continues to be so prominent and aggressive with its trading card game is due to the title's success. The "significant investments" that Ravensburger, according to its own statement, made in building the trading card business have clearly paid off financially. At the beginning of the year, Ravensburger reported that Disney Lorcana had been "a resounding success right from the start."
After launching in North America, Germany and France, the game was released in most European countries, with a total of over one billion Lorcana cards sold. Disney Lorcan The most successful product launch in Ravensburger's company history, which has contributed significantly to the company's sales growth over the past two years," said the publisher. And the market launch in Asia was scheduled for 2025. The strong community, which ensures that the game is well-received on social media and on the official channels of the trading card game, also contributes to the success. Disney Lorcan remains a public issue.
