Roll and write works are rarely characterized by great thematic depth. AsmodeeThe new game "Daydream" is no exception. However, the game does, in a way, blur the line between game and player. It reflects the situation and mood in which the game is intended to be played in its theme and artwork.
Fold, dice, relax
You really don't need much for Daydream. At the beginning, you choose one of eight possible combinations of the foldable game board, get a pen and cloth ready, and you can start playing.

The two dice are rolled, and everyone decides which clouds to enter the two numbers into. New numbers must always be entered next to numbers already on the roll. If the dice don't quite match up, you can use leaves to change the value by +/- 1. This allows you to create values between 0 and 9. Alternatively, you can skip dice altogether and instead draw a new leaf, which you can then immediately use to modify the dice.
Once a row or column is completely filled, you look at the numbers there. If there are duplicate numbers, nothing happens. If there are no duplicates, you mark the dot space at the beginning of the row/column and may connect as many dots on the objects in the upper part of the game board as there are numbers in the row/column. If you manage to make the numbers consecutively ascending or descending, you mark the sun space instead and connect suns on the objects. You mark the objects from left to right and from top to bottom. Some objects offer an additional leaf or sun connection once they are outlined.
The game ends as soon as one person has either filled all the cloud spaces or outlined all the objects. Points are then awarded for each completely outlined object, and additional points depending on the chosen way the board is folded.
The solo mode works almost exactly like the multiplayer game. The only difference is that when a die is skipped, a "thorn" is drawn between the leaves, and at the end of the game, one point is deducted for every two thorns. The result is then compared to a table corresponding to the chosen folding method.

Conclusion
Daydream delivers exactly what its artwork promises: a relaxed roll-and-write game. The basic rules are also incredibly simple. Its biggest strength is its versatility. The different possibilities offered by the foldable game board provide genuine variety.
The two individual game boards aren't exactly groundbreaking, but the fun really starts when you combine them. The different rules for each combination are easy to learn and each offers a unique gameplay experience and new ways to score points. Personally, I like the AD and ABC combination the best.

Because everyone plays simultaneously, a game can easily be played in 10 minutes, which suits the game very well. Of course, a bit of luck with the dice is involved, but with the cards and clever placement of the numbers, you never really feel completely at their mercy.
Visually, the game is a real success and immediately puts you in the right mood. The foldable boards make a good impression and show no signs of wear so far. I can only really recommend the cloud wipes for correcting individual numbers, as they are quite small. To wipe everything away at the end of a game, I would definitely use something larger.
The solo mode also works very well. The solution with the thorns to "punish" skipping a dice roll is well-chosen. The point values to be beaten are well-chosen for each combination and make the game very appealing even to me, someone who doesn't usually enjoy high-score solo variants.
Our preview of Daydream You get a great overall package that, due to the many combination possibilities, feels somewhat bigger than it actually is.
