Pokémon doesn't have much high-class competition in the video game segment, but Palworld, a survival crafting game with an open world around small monsters, is launching on Steam on January 19th and can pose a threat to the genre leader. At least as long as the quality is right.
A kind of Pokémon with a gun, in an open game world and survival crafting as an accompanying element to pass the time - at least the general data is correct for Palworld. On January 19th, the game will go into early access for the PC on Steam, but - as is often the case with such pre-release releases - with some restrictions.
Palworld: Starting up after a delay
Basically, fans should have played Palworld long ago, but there was a delay with the consequence that the open world game about cute pocket monsters would not appear until 2024. The “Pals” – some of them look very similar to a Pokémon – are the real stars of the game. They accompany the players on adventures, also fight against each other and serve as mounts.
However, this “Pokémon” is much more brutal: fans handle guns, let their animal companions work for them - or even slaughter them to eat them. In any case, there is no such idea with the gentle original from Gamefreak. The only drawback to the Early Access start: There will be neither PvP nor crossplay. So fans still have to be patient here. However, the developers are already testing player-versus-player battles internally and experimenting, so battles between human players should probably start soon.
You will also have to do without crossplay, although Palworld will also be available for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. According to their own statements, the developers are also working on this. You want to submit the features “as quickly as possible”. By the way, there are currently no plans for a launch on the Playstation 5.
Palworld launches into Early Access on January 19th with over 100 Pals, over 70 building types and more than 350 items. This development phase is expected to last around a year, and the aim is to continually expand the game with content. Developer Pocketpair wants to publish the roadmap for the first year shortly after the start of early access.
