Sniper Elite: The Board Game

Digitally, the stealth series Sniper Elite from developer Rebellion has crept into the hearts of numerous gamers. Sniper Elite: Resistance, the sixth installment in the series, was released on home gaming devices at the beginning of this year. An analog board game version of the successful series was also released some time ago. Kickstarter been financed. Andrรฉ had the opportunity to take a closer look at the English version of the game a few years ago and found it to be goodWith the release of the German version, we want to briefly introduce the game again in this 5-minute preview and remind you of it, because the game is great!

This 5-minute insight is intended to deliver what the title suggests. A brief insight with our opinion in just under 5 minutes of reading..

One against all. This is the central theme of Sniper Elite: The Board Game. One player competes with their sniper against up to three other players, who play the defendersโ€”consisting of three squads of three units each. The sniper's goal is to complete his two missions as inconspicuously as possible. The defenders' goal is to locate the sniper and inflict two wounds. Alternatively, the defenders can try to delay the sniper from completing his mission for so long that his time runs out.

Players alternate, starting with the sniper. The sniper attempts to move as skillfully as possible across the map, eliminating enemy units, looting locations for better equipment, and completing his missions. He has a limited amount of time to complete these missions. As soon as he completes one of his missions, the countdown resets, and he has time to complete his second mission.

The defenders then take turns together. Each squad can either scout or perform two other actions. While scouting, they can scan specific sectors and determine whether the sniper is in them. Other actions allow the defenders to move across the map and locate or attack the sniper. Units can also be detached and repositioned in later rounds. Fallen units can also be repositioned.

Conclusion

Through very simple mechanisms, Sniper Elite: The Board Game manages to create a tense game of mouse and cat, with one side trying to track down the sniper, while the sniper tries to evade his pursuers as skillfully as possible. The game does a near-perfect job of keeping the tension high. With every little clue, the urge to find the sniper grows. Conversely, with every clue, you sweat profusely, hoping not to get caught. This back and forth is really a lot of fun, even if, in my opinion, there are better games in the one-vs-many genre โ€“ such as Mind MGMT or Terrorscape. But one thing makes Sniper Elite: The Board Game particularly special. It is probably the simplest of all the one-vs-many games I have ever played. Even casual players won't have much trouble understanding the rules. Furthermore, it is quick to set up compared to other games in its genre. The quick setup and quick explanation make this the easiest one-vs-many game to get up and running! 5-10 minutes and you're already in the middle of the game!

Only for players unfamiliar with the Sniper Elite series might the World War theme not be entirely to their taste. However, if you're a fan of the video game, you'll have a lot of fun with the board gameโ€”especially as a sniper. There's also a solo mode. It works quite well, but it feels a bit too easy to win. Maybe I was just lucky, though. It was definitely fun in itself. Overall, I can only agree with my colleague Andrรฉ and wholeheartedly recommend the game. Especially if you love one-vs-many gamesโ€”like meโ€”you should definitely take a look at Sniper Elite: The Board Game.

Summary
Sniper Elite: The Board Game is the simplest one-vs-many game I've played so far. The advantage is that the game is quick to explain and set up, yet still a lot of fun. Not quite as much fun as other titles in its genre, but definitely enough if you're on the time side! The game is definitely worth a look, or at least several!
